Sciences économiques et sociales | University Lumière Lyon 2

The originality of the M.A. programme hosted in the Department of Economics at the University of Lyon 2, is the special focus on history of economic thought, philosophy of economics and socioeconomic courses taught with a pluralistic approach, such as Gender Economics, Monetary Economics, Development economics and Institutional economics.

How does the programme provide content to ensure students achieve an understanding of a reasonably diverse set of perspectives on understanding economies?

Different perspectives are discussed in detail, starting from the Classical Political Economy until today. Discussions about economic theories are accompanied with a strong methodological and institutional approach. Diversity in methods and contents is a constant aim.

How does the programme ensure students understand the interaction between economic and ecological systems?

Until now the interaction between economic and ecological systems is only treat through the external seminars. We invite colleagues from other universities specialized in this topic. We are planning to open a course on “Political economy of the environment” from September 2022 in collaboration with SciencePo Lyon.

How does the programme ensure students understand how to critically explore real-world evidence, both qualitative and quantitative?

By using history of economic thought and Institutional economics of old and current debates trough some quality and quantitative methods.

What pedagogical approaches does the programme use to ensure that students examine the historical context, assumptions and values in all economic thinking?

The main focus in this master degree is the study of current debates trough a historical and socioeconomic perspective. Almost all the courses have a historical dimension and a critical approach.

How does the department ensure that the teaching culture and capacity to deliver economic pluralism are continually improving?

This is mainly left to the efforts of the economists working in the department who are actively in different societies in social economy, history of economics, philosophy of economics or institutional economics, as: Marion Gaspard, Franck Bessis, Judith Favereau, Nicolas Chaigneau, Michael Assous, Rebeca Gomez Betancourt, Claire Silvant, Véronique Dutraive, Laure Bazzoli, Jérôme Blanc, Ludovic Frobert from the university of Lyon2, école normale supérieure de Lyon and SciencePo Lyon ; but also to the close link with our research department Triangle http://triangle.ens-lyon.fr who is a multidisciplinary center with on sociology, philosophy, gender studies and political science. Every year we invited at least 2 professors from abroad who participates in the master thanks to the Minerve program https://www.univ-lyon2.fr/formation/minerve WThis is mainly left to the efforts of the economists working in the department who are actively in different societies in social economy, history of economics, philosophy of economics or institutional economics, as: Marion Gaspard, Franck Bessis, Judith Favereau, Nicolas Chaigneau, Michael Assous, Rebeca Gomez Betancourt, Claire Silvant, Véronique Dutraive, Laure Bazzoli, Jérôme Blanc, Ludovic Frobert from the university of Lyon2, école normale supérieure de Lyon and SciencePo Lyon ; but also to the close link with our research department Triangle http://triangle.ens-lyon.fr who is a multidisciplinary center with on sociology, philosophy, gender studies and political science. Very good master program, combining a strong theoretical and methodological structure. A solid base of research tools are developed, and professors from other universities and research centers also contribute different approaches to the program. Through a critical and multidisciplinary focus, the major issues of economics and society are addressed. I highly recommend it.
